Long Hauler Takes Right Turn
Raul drove long-haul trucks for forty years. He always kept the law and worked hard. His work took him all over the nation. On weekends, Raul relaxed with a few drinks, but he was always ready to get back on the road when he had work to do.
But when Raul retired, he began to drink more heavily and his drinking led to trouble in the form of a DUI. The judge gave Raul the choice of either spending time behind bars or to become a member of the mission’s recovery program.
Raul came to the mission last January - and change is what we’ve seen in Raul’s life. He has applied himself to Basic English grammar studies and is closer to taking his GED test. He has enjoyed the responsibility of working at the mission’s Super Thrift Store and has taken a lead role in the store’s new production center.
Most importantly, Raul has been diligent to read the Bible and take in as much as he can of God’s Word at Bible study and at church. He’s happy that God is taking away his alcohol problem and replacing it with joy and happiness.
Change is always hard to make, especially when you get older. We are so proud of Raul. He graduated from our program in August and is part of our Aftercare group of men. These men stay connected with the mission through volunteer service, continued study, and a monthly meal together. After Raul visits his children in Idaho, he plans to return to Santa Maria and stay connected with us by volunteering at the Super Thrift Store.
